An acoustic set as the sun goes down, lively brass to accompany salsa dancing, or a festival atmosphere with a pop cover band. Nothing sets off a summer party quite like live music.
However you chose to celebrate the long summer evenings, here are our practical tips for a smooth running outdoor gig:
Amplification - If you’re hosting a small gathering, acoustic instruments should be heard no problem. But if you include a singer they will likely need a mic and speaker(s). The same goes for any electric instruments. For larger scale events hire in a professional sound company or discuss with the musicians what their package includes.
Stage - A performance platform for the musicians / artists may be necessary. Plan carefully and hire a stage that can support the weight of musicians and all of the equipment, including speakers and monitors.
Cover - Summer weather is never guaranteed! The option of a covered area for musicians is essential. Bear in mind too that extended periods in direct sunlight can be uncomfortable for performers, and in some cases not possible with the nature of classical instruments, strings in particular.
Permission and permits - Depending on your venue you may need a live music licence. Check with the venue whether they have this.
